BEGINNER FRIENDLY! PERFECT FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER TOUCHED CLAY BEFORE This is a relaxed, hands-on experience where you’ll leave with something unique and entirely your own. All materials provided. Small class size and patient instructors. PART 1 -Subtractive sculpture, as opposed to additive sculpture, is a process in which you carve or cut away from a mass of material. Using this method to create can be incredibly meditative and satisfying, and some even find this method easier when making representative pieces. This technique is most often seen in wood, stone, and marble. In this discovery workshop we will be carving from partially hardened blocks of clay. Michelangelo believed the role of the sculptor was to reveal what already existed within the stone. In this workshop, we borrow that philosophy—but leave realism behind. Starting with a solid form of clay, you’ll carve, scrape, and subtract material to uncover abstract shapes, flowing contours, and compelling negative space. Rather than sculpting an object, you’ll explore balance, rhythm, tension, and movement through form alone. Each removal becomes a decision, each cut a conversation between intention and discovery. What emerges may not represent anything literal, yet can feel deeply expressive all the same. In this workshop you will learn: ~ To utilize negative space in sculpture ~ What tools to use to achieve desired results ~ Techniques on how to carve your block ~ How to hollow out your piece and make it safe to fire PART 2 - GLAZING: After your workshop, return for a glazing session (included). Your finished piece will be ready in 2–3 weeks. REGISTRATION CLOSES ONLINE AT 9PM THE EVENING BEFORE THE SCHEDULED WORKSHOP. TO REGISTER ON THE DAY-OF THE WORKSHOP, PLEASE CALL US AT 778-757-3274.
