BEGINNER FRIENDLY! PERFECT FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER TOUCHED CLAY BEFORE This is a relaxed, hands-on experience where you’ll leave with something unique and entirely your own. All materials provided. Small class size and patient instructors. Start with a smooth round of fresh clay and shape it into a plate that will hold more than food, it will hold a story. In this workshop, you’ll learn the ancient satisfying art of sgraffito, a carving technique that reveals striking contrast as your lines cut through layers of surface colour to uncover the clay beneath. Using simple tools and guided techniques, you’ll sketch and carve a design that feels personal and alive. Symbols, plants, creatures, patterns, words, or quiet little moments can all find their way onto your surface. Each mark becomes part of a slow conversation between your hands and the clay. This beginner-friendly class walks you through shaping, surface preparation, and carving so you can create a plate that feels intentional and one-of-a-kind. No drawing experience needed, just curiosity and a willingness to follow where the lines want to go. Your finished piece will be clear glazed and kiln fired, returning to you transformed into a lasting record of the moment it was made. Depending on your skill level and design choice, you may be able to create two medium sized (15cm) plates or two to three graduated plates (one each of 18 cm, 15 cm and 10 cm) in this workshop. Upon registration, you will receive a printable template with true-to-size areas to plan your image. You are welcome to print a design to copy onto your piece or show off your creativity with an original design! The diameter of available design space on each size of plate is as follows: Small 6.5cm, Medium 11cm, Large 13cm.
