Harness the Sun with Cyanotype Printing

A piece of paper, coated in a light-sensitive solution, quietly shifts to blue. Cyanotype blue is an unmistakable hue that blooms around the outlines of leaves, lace, strings of beads, and anything else you want to place onto your page. It slowly deepens as sunlight does its work. Shapes emerge and shadows turn permanent. It’s part science, part art, and entirely captivating!

Cyanotype printing, also known as solar printing, is a fun summer ritual here in the studio. It’s an old photographic technique (think 1800s botanists and blueprint chemists), but the process never feels dated. In fact, it feels like a tiny science experiment with an artistic soul!

Our Cyanotypes: Harness the Sun workshop is designed to welcome curious beginners and returning artists alike. You don’t need to be “good at art”, rather only open to experimenting, observing, and seeing what unfolds when you give the sun some say in your process.

Every cyanotype print is unique. The way the light hits your arrangement—the curve of a petal, the shadow of a button, the softness of a found feather—becomes completely your own. Experiment with different layouts on provided paper prints, canvas pencil case, and canvas tote bag!

We especially love the moment when you leave the studio with your arms full of fresh, wet prints. Some crisp, some dreamy, all beautiful. Whether you turn them into greeting cards, frame them, or just pin them up at home, you’ve made something from light and instinct and curiosity. That’s no small thing.

We have a wide selection of items to use and you are welcome to bring items that hold meaning to you. Don't forget to take them home and please be mindful of the shadow your items will cast!

This is a sun printing workshop that was made to be shared. You’ll swap materials, laugh over unexpected outcomes, and cheer each other on as your compositions slowly reveal themselves! It’s low-pressure and high-reward which is perfect for a spontaneous creative afternoon, or even as a summer birthday party.
